College Faculty-Staff Meetings
The first college faculty-staff meeting of the fall semester will be from noon–1 p.m. next Monday, Sept. 25, in room 130. A virtual option will be available. View PDF agenda. A Webex meeting invitation will be forthcoming. Faculty-staff meetings for the remainder of the academic year will be from noon–1 p.m. Mondays, Oct. 9, Nov. 6, Dec. 4, Jan. 29, Feb. 19, March 4, April 8 and May 6. Please mark your calendars and plan to participate in the college's shared governance.
University Awards Ceremony
Six College of Design faculty and staff will be recognized at the 2023 University Awards Ceremony at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 20, in the Durham Great Hall at the Memorial Union. A reception will follow. Architecture professor Mitchell Squire has been named a Morrill Professor. Carol Faber, associate professor of graphic design, will receive the Regents Award for Faculty Excellence, and Francis Owusu, professor and chair of community and regional planning, will receive the Award for Inclusive Excellence.
Gary Taylor, professor of community and regional planning; Robin McNeely, manager of the GIS Support and Research Facility; and Amy Logan, research scientist with the GIS Facility, are part of the team that will receive the Interdisciplinary Team Research Award. Please help us congratulate and celebrate these outstanding colleagues!
Faculty Success Advisor Applications
The College of Design seeks internal candidates for the position of faculty success advisor (FSA), whose role is to actively help the college promote a culture that assures the success and well-being of faculty and encourages faculty to flourish. The position is open to all College of Design tenured faculty members who are committed to supporting faculty success and possess strong communication skills. Faculty should refer to the Sept. 12 email from senior associate dean Seda McKilligan or the linked call for applications for more information.
Applications are due to Amy Bannister, executive assistant to the dean, by 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 2.
Rome Program FundISU Campaign
In its first week, the College of Design's Rome Program FundISU campaign has raised $500 of the overall $3,000 goal. This month-long campaign, which runs through Friday, Oct. 13, will support our flagship Rome Program with gifts that will directly impact our students. Contributions will help more students travel to Rome, purchase art supplies, visit museums in Italy during their semester abroad and much more. Reminder: Foreign Travel Grant Proposals
Foreign Travel Grant proposals for the travel period of Nov. 1, 2023–June 30, 2024 are due from departments to the Dean's Office by 5 p.m. this Friday, Sept. 22. The college's Research, Extension and Outreach Council will review applications and provide recommendations before forwarding to the university.
Reminder: Honors Seminar Proposals
The University Honors Program is accepting proposals to teach an honors seminar in Spring 2024. These one or two-credit courses, offered for a half or full term, allow honors students to examine topics of current or special interest. They are offered on a pass/fail basis and enrollment is usually limited to 17 students. Instructor(s) are allocated $500 for their professional development (professional subscriptions, membership fees, travel). Submit your proposal by this Friday, Sept. 22. Women Impacting ISU Calendar Nominations
Do you know a woman at Iowa State who works to positively impact the university through her actions, involvement and achievements? Nominate her for the 2023 Women Impacting ISU calendar! To be eligible for nomination, faculty and staff must be employed by Iowa State for the 2024 calendar year. Students graduating in May 2024 are eligible. The calendar is open to individuals who identify their gender as “woman,” inclusive of cisgender, transgender and nonbinary identities. Completed nominations must be received by 11:59 p.m. this Sunday, Sept. 24.

United States International Poster Biennial
The inaugural "United States International Poster Biennial" exhibition will take place Oct. 5–26 in Gallery 181. The traveling juried exhibition, co-organized by USIBP co-founder and president Christopher Scott, ISU assistant teaching professor of graphic design, features 260 posters in five topic categories selected from 7,380 entries submitted by professional and student artists, graphic designers, photographers and visual communicators from 75 countries. An opening reception and awards presentation will be from 4–6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 4. Read more

Raluca Iancu
Work by Raluca Iancu, assistant professor of art and visual culture, is part of two current exhibitions: "Ink Only IV," a national biennial juried exhibition of contemporary printmaking, on display Sept. 16–Oct. 14 in the fourth-floor gallery at the Birmingham Public Library in Birmingham, Alabama; and "Art of the Book," an international juried exhibition, on display Sept. 18, 2023–Jan. 6, 2024 at the Rochester Public Library in Rochester, New York.
She was also part of the "PRINT+: Sameness and Otherness in Contemporary Print Media" exhibition March 17–Aug. 27 at the Museum of Contemporary Art Jacksonville in Jacksonville, Florida. Virtual tours are still available.
Miriam Martincic
Miriam Martincic, assistant teaching professor of graphic design, created an illustration for the article “The High-Wire Act of Caregiving and Saving for Retirement" published in The New York Times.
Ulrike Passe
Ulrike Passe, professor of architecture, was invited to participate in a symposium on architectural education for sustainable building design at the Sustainable Design Lab at MIT. She was among 20 symposium participants who discussed how to pursue evidence-based architectural design using environmental performance analysis methods and shared experiments and exercises toward an Instructor’s Handbook for Net Zero Building Design to be published in spring 2024.
