ISU College of Design will showcase innovative student, faculty work during IGNITE

AMES, Iowa—The Iowa State University College of Design will highlight the ingenuity of students and faculty during the university’s third annual IGNITE, May 4–6 in the Student Innovation Center.

The college will host activities including a juried exhibition of student work; a research panel featuring presentations by faculty members and graduate students; a showcase of projects from several interdisciplinary spring option (elective) studios; a letterpress/printmaking demonstration; a face/body scanning demonstration; and additional exhibitions and displays.

Andrea Quam, interim director of innovation and entrepreneurship, calls the IGNITE event the perfect time to demonstrate how the College of Design is constantly collaborating to create new ideas.

“We view IGNITE as an opportunity to share with industry experts, community members and colleagues within the university the amazing things we’re doing,” said Quam, an associate professor of graphic design. “This is the physical embodiment of our spirit of interdisciplinary innovation and entrepreneurship.”

“Artists, designers and planners must constantly innovate to make the world a better place,” she continued. “With design thinking at the forefront of all our processes, innovation is second nature to how we get things done. I am excited and proud to have that on full display during IGNITE.”

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

Make-A-Print-Take-A-Print

College of Design Innovation Scholar Raluca Iancu, assistant professor of art and visual culture, will demonstrate letterpress printmaking, and participants can make and take letterpress prints. The activity will run from 11 a.m.–1 p.m. Thursday, May 4, in the Student Innovation Center atrium.

Ecologies of Care Exhibition

This juried exhibition will run May 4-12 in 2260 SICTR. A reception will be from 12:30–1:30 p.m. Friday, May 5, in the courtyard adjoining this second-floor space. An RSVP is requested but not required. Five student awards will be announced, including Best of Show, three Judges’ Choice and one Legion Paper award.

The exhibition will showcase the creative talent and innovative solutions of College of Design students that are used to promote and preserve the delicate balance of our environment. The show was juried by the college’s Innovation Scholars: Jiwnath Ghimire, assistant professor of community and regional planning, Raluca Iancu, assistant professor of art and visual culture, and Daejin Kim, assistant professor of interior design.

Creativity at the Intersection of Science and Art Exhibition

This exhibition of work by biological and premedical illustration students, organized by Kim Moss, associate professor of art and visual culture and director of the BPMI program, will be open from 9 a.m.–4 p.m. Thursday, May 4, and 9 a.m.–12:30 p.m. Friday, May 5, in 2106 SICTR. The display will include 3D-printed models, scientific infographs and illustrations.

BPMI students also will offer a face/body scanning demonstration from 9 a.m.–12:30 p.m. May 5, in the Visualization Lab, 2261 SICTR. The session will provide a look at 3D modeling, spatial visualization of human anatomy and prosthetics.

Spectrum of Innovation Panel

Panel presentations will be from 1:30–3 p.m. Friday, May 5, in the Step-a-torium. Panelists include four faculty members and two graduate students (all but one from the College of Design), who will each share their research and scholarship and how it relates to the “ecology of care” theme.

DSN S 546 Option Studios Exhibition

Student work from seven of the College of Design’s interdisciplinary option studios will be displayed in various locations throughout the Student Innovation Center. These advanced, project-based elective studios examine diverse themes and provide juniors, seniors and graduate students from multiple majors an opportunity to work together on challenges at different scales. Large posters describing each studio will be display along with the student work in each space.

Courses that will have work featured during IGNITE include:

Advanced Color, taught by Julie Irish, assistant professor of interior design.
After El Apagón: Networks of Solidarity, taught by Nathalie Frankowski and Cruz Garcia, associate professors of architecture.
Changing Landscapes, taught by Alex Braidwood, associate professor of graphic design.
Experimental Structures: More with Less, taught by Rob Whitehead, associate professor of architecture. This class is partially supported through the Vernon Stone Fund in Architecture.
More than Poor and un/Housed: Designing Abolitionist Spaces of Care, taught by Jane Rongerude, associate professor of community and regional planning, and Julie Stevens, associate professor of landscape architecture and College of Design Innovation Fellow.
NASA’s Innovative Mission through Design, taught by Pete Evans, assistant professor of industrial design; Mike Ford, associate professor of practice in interior design; and Andrea Quam, associate professor of graphic design. The studio is not affiliated with NASA; the students’ projects are conceptual designs for Kennedy Space Center.
Preservation and Cultural Heritage Valletta, Malta: International Perspectives and Design Issues, taught by Innovation Fellow Diane Al Shihabi, associate professor of interior design, and Mikesch Mueke, associate professor of architecture.

Seeding Additive Manufacturing: Clay to Concrete Exhibition

Made in Iowa: 3D Printing Rural, Affordable Housing Exhibition

Located in the first-floor atrium east of the Step-a-torium and in the lower level across from the auditorium (0114 SICTR), these displays document the results of a six-year partnership between the ceramics studio, taught by Innovation Fellow Ingrid Lilligren, professor of art and visual culture, and the Computation and Construction Lab, led by Shelby Doyle, associate professor of architecture and Stan G. Thurston Professor in Design Build.

Through this collaboration, students and faculty from multiple departments have learned how to 3D print projects with clay and concrete. This knowledge has allowed them to create conceptual affordable housing options for rural Iowa. Both exhibitions will be on display through the end of the semester.
