ISU Stan G. Thurston Professor in Design Build honored with AIA Iowa Educator Award
10/02/22
AMES, Iowa — Shelby Doyle, an associate professor of architecture and the Stan G. Thurston Professor in Design Build at Iowa State University, received the 2022 Educator Award from the Iowa chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA Iowa) Thursday, Sept. 29, at the AIA Iowa Annual Convention in Des Moines.
The award recognizes significant contributions to architectural education in Iowa.
Doyle joined the Iowa State faculty in August 2015 as an ISU Presidential High Impact Hire in design-build and digital fabrication. She received the ISU Department of Architecture’s inaugural Daniel J. Huberty Faculty Fellowship in 2016 and the Thurston Professorship in 2021. She is co-founder of the Computation and Construction Lab and director of the Architectural Robotics Lab at Iowa State.
Her award-winning research and teaching focus on digital fabrication and mapping, environmental sustainability, gender equity in architecture and technology, and public engagement through architecture.
Her work at Iowa State has been recognized with the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) 2020 Creative Achievement Award, the Autodesk / Association for Computer Aided Design in Architecture (ACADIA) 2019 Emerging Research Award and the Building Technology Educators Society (BTES) 2019 Emerging Faculty Award.
‘Tough but fair’
Doyle “is the classic ‘tough but fair’ teacher who inspires innovative, probing work by students from diverse backgrounds and with widely varying interests,” said Thomas Leslie, FAIA, Morrill Professor in Architecture and the 2015 AIA Iowa Educator Award recipient, in his nomination letter.
“She has been diligent and passionate about sharing the experience and recognition of her internationally recognized scholarship with the students who have worked alongside her, giving them the credentials to go on to leading graduate programs and begin academic careers of their own.”
In support of Doyle’s nomination, Erin Linsey Hunt said, “Shelby is the professor who most impacted my education at Iowa State. She constantly challenged me to set higher goals; without her mentorship and encouragement, I would not have considered pursuing a graduate degree, let alone a program at an Ivy League institution, or [a career in] teaching.”
Hunt received a bachelor of architecture from Iowa State in 2017 and a master of design studies in technology from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design in 2021 and is now an assistant professor of architecture at Texas Tech University in Lubbock.
Publications and grants
Doyle serves on the ACADIA and ACSA boards of directors and is a member of the ISU Office of the Vice President for Research’s 2022-2023 Research Collaboration Catalysts cohort. Her work has been published in the Journal of Architectural Education, the International Journal of Architectural Computing and Columbia University’s Avery Review, as well as in the proceedings of national and international conferences and meetings.
She is part of a $1.4 million Strategic Infrastructure Program grant from the Iowa Economic Development Authority for the ISU College of Design’s 3D Affordable Innovative Technologies Housing Project and a subsequent grant from the University of Iowa’s Center for Global and Regional Environmental Research to fund research into corn cob ash as an alternative to crushed gravel used in cement mixtures to facilitate 3D printing of homes.
Doyle holds a bachelor of science in architecture with honors from the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, and a master of architecture from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design. She is a licensed architect and a LEED Accredited Professional.
