The title of University Professor is bestowed on a faculty member who has acted as a change agent by making significant contributions to the university and who has demonstrated outstanding performance in at least one other area of faculty responsibility. The awardee retains the title for the remainder of his or her career at Iowa State.

Osterberg joined the Iowa State architecture faculty as an assistant professor in 1977; he was promoted to associate professor with tenure in 1981 and professor in 1995. Since 1998 he has been the principal investigator for ongoing research on accessibility for ISU's Facilities Planning and Management department, including publication of three editions of "Access for Everyone: A Guide to the Accessibility of Buildings and Sites with references to 2010 ADASAD." The book is used nationwide by architects, landscape architects, planners, interior designers, building code officials and main street coordinators.
