Student work created in Rome on display Sept. 5-19 in ISU College of Design’s Gallery 181

AMES, Iowa — Projects by Iowa State University fourth-year architecture and landscape architecture students who studied in Italy last spring will be on display Sept. 5-19 in the ISU College of Design's Gallery 181.
Rome Spring '14: The Tevere and Beyond—Architecture and Landscape Architecture Multidisciplinary Projections will showcase work created by 41 architecture and 11 landscape architecture students who participated in the spring 2014 College of Design Rome Program.
The show will include drawings, notebooks, models and digital projections from individual and collaborative student projects related to the Tiber River corridor through Rome as well as from field trips and independent studies.
An opening reception will begin at about 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5, in Gallery 181, following the Department of Architecture's Premiere 14 student scholarship and awards ceremony (4:30 – 5:30 p.m.) and a guest lecture by Thomas Leslie, Pickard Chilton Professor in Architecture (approximately 5:45 – 6:45 p.m.), both in Kocimski Auditorium, 101 College of Design. Leslie recently spent eight months in Italy and France as a Booth Family Rome Prize Fellow in historic preservation and conservation, researching the work of postwar Italian engineer and builder Pier Luigi Nervi.
The landscape architecture department will host a welcoming event for landscape architecture students and guests from 5 to 5:30 p.m. in the college's Lyle E. Lightfoot Forum prior to Leslie's lecture.
During their semester abroad, students completed drawing and studio courses, Italian language classes, and seminars in urban history and "films and neighborhoods." In addition to their regular coursework and field trips, students from Iowa State also participated in a workshop with students from Roma Tre University.
Courses were taught by Iowa State professors Mark Engelbrecht and Gregory Palermo, architecture, and Mira Engler, landscape architecture, together with Rome-based instructors Claudia Cremasco, Jennifer Griffiths, Francesco Mancini, Linda Nolan, Tom Rankin, Pia Schneider (resident director of the Rome Program), Carol Taddeo and Paola Vecchio.
Gallery 181 is located on the first floor of the College of Design building on the west side of the Iowa State campus. Exhibition viewing hours vary and will be posted on the web at www.design.iastate.edu/gallery181.php. Admission is free.
