Three ISU College of Design faculty awarded promotions, tenure

AMES, Iowa — At its April 24 meeting in Council Bluffs, the Board of Regents, State of Iowa, approved promotion and tenure awards for three Iowa State University College of Design faculty members for the 2014-15 academic year.
Carlton Basmajian was promoted from assistant professor to associate professor with tenure in community and regional planning. Associate professors Teresa Paschke and Chuck Richards were promoted to professor (already tenured) in integrated studio arts. Promotions take effect Aug. 16, 2014.
Carlton Basmajian
(image) Basmajian joined the Iowa State community and regional planning faculty in 2008 and was appointed the director of graduate education for the department in fall 2013. He also serves on the faculty of the graduate program in sustainable agriculture.
Basmajian teaches the history of American planning, demographic methods and community planning studio. He is the author of Atlanta Unbound: Enabling Urban Sprawl through Policy and Planning (Temple University Press, 2013). His research focuses on the 20th-century history of American planning, the politics of regional planning and urban decentralization, and planning and development issues surrounding cemeteries and burial.
Basmajian received the Raymond G. and Lula G. Polster Teaching Award from the College of Design in 2011. He holds a bachelor of arts in history from the University of Chicago, a master of city planning from the Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, and a PhD in urban, technological and environmental planning from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
Teresa Paschke
(image) Paschke joined the integrated studio arts faculty as an assistant professor in 2000 and was promoted to associate professor with tenure in 2006. She has taught color and textile design courses at all levels, from sophomore to graduate.
Paschke's award-winning artwork has been featured in many national and international exhibitions as well as American Craft magazine, FIBERARTS magazine, Shuttle, Spindle and Dyepot magazine and Surface Design Journal. Her work also appears in several books, including FIBERARTS Design Book Six, FIBERARTS Design Book Seven and most recently, Textiles: The Art of Mankind by Mary Schoeser (Thames & Hudson, 2012). Her current creative scholarship examines the history of textile printing processes and, specifically, the relationship between hand- and mechanical-printing methods.
Paschke is a member of several national and international organizations, including the American Craft Council, Surface Design Association, Textile Center in Minneapolis and Textile Society of America. She holds a bachelor of fine arts in fine art from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and a master of fine arts in textile design from the University of Kansas, Lawrence.
Chuck Richards
(image) Richards joined the integrated studio arts faculty in 1998 and was promoted to associate professor with tenure in 2003. He is the drawing coordinator for the College of Design's first-year Core Design Program and teaches courses in beginning through advanced drawing and life drawing.
Richards is the author and illustrator of several children's books, including Lulu's Magic Wand (Walker & Company/Bloomsbury Publishing, 2012); Critter Sitter (Walker & Company, 2008), which received the Washington Children's Choice Picture Book Award and Children's Book of the Month Club Pick in 2009; and Jungle Gym Jitters (Walker & Company, 2004), which was named an Honor Book in the 2006 Great Lakes Book Awards sponsored by the Michigan Reading Association. He also illustrated Author Day for Room 3T by Robin Pulver (Clarion Books, 2005). His award-winning artwork has been featured in numerous exhibitions throughout the U.S. and in Lanzhou, China.
Richards received the Raymond G. and Lula G. Polster Teaching Award from the ISU College of Design in 2004 and the James Hungtington Ellis Award for Excellence in Introductory Undergraduate Teaching from Iowa State in 2007. He was named "Best New Talent" by Nick Jr. Magazine and "Most Promising New Illustrator" in the Publishers Weekly annual poll of children's booksellers, both in 2005.
He holds a bachelor of fine arts in painting from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a master of fine arts in painting and drawing from the University of Wisconsin, Madison.
