ISU College of Design professor honored for service in art education

AMES, Iowa — Barbara Caldwell, associate professor of integrated studio arts and art education in the College of Design at Iowa State University, received the 2014 Ziegfeld Service Award from the United States Society for Education through Art (USSEA) March 30 at the National Art Education Association (NAEA) Convention in San Diego, Calif.
The award recognizes one professional art educator annually for outstanding and internationally recognized contributions to art education through exceptional achievement in scholarly writing, research, or professional or community service.
USSEA President Steve Willis highlighted Caldwell's years of leadership and service to the organization as a national Delegates Assembly representative, board of directors secretary and global, multicultural art educator. He also commended her role in the New Art Basics program at Iowa State, where she authored the "pluralistic approach" framework for art curriculum development and action research.
"My service to USSEA and my professional endeavors are grounded in a desire to help people see their own dignity and to deeply appreciate others across all kinds of differences. It happens through creative, compassionate art education and scholarship," Caldwell said.
On the Iowa State faculty since 1996, Caldwell has taught courses in art education and photography and supervised graduate research and student teaching. She has been an active member of USSEA and NAEA since 1996. She has served on the USSEA board of directors since 1999 and the Art Educators of Iowa (AEI) board of directors since 1996.
Among her many honors, Caldwell received the 2007 Kathy Connors Award for teaching, mentoring and collaboration from the NAEA Women’s Caucus, the 2006 NAEA Distinguished Service Within the Profession Award and the 2005 AEI Distinguished Service Within the Profession Award. She was named the 2001 Iowa Art Educator of the Year, 1998 NAEA Western Regional Art Educator of the Year and 1997 Iowa Higher Education Educator of the Year (1997).
Caldwell also received the 2003 Alumni Hall of Fame Award from the Illinois State University College of Education and the 2000 Raymond G. and Lula G. Polster Teaching Award from the ISU College of Design. Her work has been published in the Journal of Cultural Research in Art Education.
Caldwell earned a bachelor of fine arts degree from Illinois Wesleyan University, Bloomington, Ill., in 1973; a master of science degree in education in 1980, a bachelor of science degree in art education with high honors in 1987 (second bachelor’s degree required for K-12 certification), and a doctorate in art education in 1991, all from Illinois State University, Normal, Ill. She was an arts and humanities instructor at the College of DuPage, Glen Ellyn, Ill., from 1991 to 1996, and an art education instructor at Illinois State University from 1986 to 1990.
USSEA was founded in 1977 as an affiliate of the International Society for Education through Art (InSEA) and the NAEA. Its members work in curriculum development, teaching and research related to art education and cultural knowledge, and promote greater understanding and respect for learners from all backgrounds through research, art curricula, instruction and practices that are inclusive and sensitive.
