Landscape architecture graduating senior Austin Javellana is ISU College of Design’s spring 2016 student marshal

AMES, Iowa — Austin Javellana of Cedar Falls will represent the Iowa State University College of Design as its student marshal at the university's public commencement exercises Saturday, May 7, at Jack Trice Stadium. His faculty escort will be Heidi Hohmann, associate professor of landscape architecture.
Javellana will graduate summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture degree and a general business minor.
Javellana was a George Washington Carver Scholar and was on the Dean's List every semester at Iowa State. Among many leadership roles, he served three years on the Iowa State Dance Marathon Recruitment Committee and as the executive director of the 2015 event, which raised an ISU record of nearly $450,000 for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. He is currently the graphic design director for the Stand – New York City Dance Marathon.
Javellana served as scholarship chairman (2013), awards chairman (2015) and president (2014) of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. He received the fraternity's 2013 James D. Oatts Award for leadership and the 2014 and 2015 Arthur R. Priest Award for the most outstanding member of the fraternity internationally, and was named the 2015 Iowa State University Greek Community Member of the Year.
Javellana also served as the ISU Senior Class Council events co-director, as an ISU President's Leadership Class Adviser and as a tour guide for the ISU Office of Admissions. He was named the 2015 ISU Student Alumni Leadership Council Homecoming King.
Javellana's list of recognitions includes the 2014 Sandra & Lynn Davis Leadership Award; 2015 W. Robert Parks and Ellen Sorge Parks Senior Scholarship; Order of Omega; 2015 Landscape Forms Design for People Scholarship from the Landscape Architecture Foundation; 2015 American Society of Landscape Architects Award of Excellence in Community Service; 2016 ISU Department of Landscape Architecture Olmsted Scholar and 2016 Iowa ASLA Award of Merit and President's Medal.
From January through August 2015, Javellana completed an internship with Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates in New York City. He will join the firm as a designer after graduation.
Javellana is the son of Joby and Tracy Javellana of Cedar Falls and a 2011 graduate of Cedar Falls High School.
