Master's thesis exhibition by ISU integrated visual arts graduate student Josianne Ishikawa explores wabi-sabi aesthetic

AMES, Iowa — "Transitory Nature," a master's thesis exhibition of work by Iowa State University integrated visual arts graduate student Josianne Ishikawa of Ames, will be on display in two locations beginning March 21.
Ishikawa's integrated media exhibition will incorporate creative nonfiction video essay, traditional photography, digital arts, encaustics and textiles, reflecting the range of processes, mediums and techniques she has studied throughout her graduate studies at Iowa State. Ishikawa will receive a Master of Fine Arts in integrated visual arts in May.
"The subject matter is inspired by the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi," Ishikawa said. "Wabi-sabi can be a place, an object, a feeling or a philosophy. It questions our desire or attachments to obtain a deeper insight, a heightened perspective and appreciation for imperfect beauty, impermanence and transience."
The exhibition of Ishikawa's artwork will be March 21 through May 13 at the Gallery in the Round, Unitarian Universal Fellowship of Ames, 1015 N. Hyland Ave. Gallery hours are 1 to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday or by appointment. To make an appointment, call (515) 292-5960. A public reception will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, April 2.
The video essay exhibition will be March 21-29 in Gallery 181, first floor of the ISU College of Design building on the west side of the Iowa State campus. Gallery hours for this show will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday or by appointment. To make an appointment, call (515) 447-8608.
