ISU College of Design Rome Show to feature work by students who studied abroad in fall 2014

AMES, Iowa — Projects by 66 Iowa State University students who studied in Italy last fall will be on display March 2-12 in the ISU College of Design's Gallery 181.
The College of Design Rome Show will feature work by 33 graphic design, 27 interior design and six integrated studio arts students who took part in the fall 2014 College of Design Rome Program.
The exhibition will include drawings, paintings, photographs, scale models, journals, books, posters, and corporate identity and packaging design projects that will reflect the students' time spent in Italy.
A closing reception will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, March 12, in the college's Lyle E. Lightfoot Forum.
Coursework
While abroad, integrated studio arts students studied Renaissance and Baroque painters while completing courses in figure drawing and painting, and mixed media.
Students in the retail interior design studio collaborated with emerging fashion designers—graduates of the IED European Institute of Design in Rome—to create and translate brand concepts into flagship stores for the designers' apparel lines.
In the Italian design and drawing class, interior design students visited showrooms and museums of contemporary Italian design in Rome and Milan and developed journals of sketches and freehand drawings, which served as precedents and inspiration for their fashion store designs.
For their corporate identity class, graphic design students researched and proposed new businesses appropriate to specific neighborhoods in Rome and developed branding and applications for those businesses.
Students in the advanced typography class developed journals that documented typography found in Rome and elsewhere in Italy, as well as posters, books based on the theme of contrasts, and experimental type-and-image projects interpreting a selected piazza in Rome.
Among projects in the packaging design class, students studied form-making techniques using paper and developed prototypes based on study of Roman architecture or local natural forms.
Students across disciplines also studied art history, photography and Italian language, and participated in sketching exercises throughout Rome and on field trips to northern and southern Italy.
Courses were taught by Iowa State faculty members Brenda Jones, associate professor of art and visual culture, and Sunghyun Kang, associate professor, and Cherie Ure, senior lecturer, graphic design, along with Rome-based instructors Serafino Amato, photography; Jennifer Griffiths, Linda Nolan and Carol Taddeo, art history; Andrew Kranis, Jody Patterson and Pia Schneider (resident director of the Rome Program), interior design; and Milena Locatelli and Paola Vecchio, Italian.
Exhibition hours
Gallery 181 is located on the first floor of the College of Design building on the west side of the Iowa State campus. Exhibition hours will be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The show also will be open from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Saturday, March 7, prior to the Rome Program lecture by Patterson. The exhibition, lecture and reception are free and open to the public.
