ISU College of Design Rome Program instructor to speak about sensory considerations for design in March 7 lecture

AMES, Iowa — Jody A. Patterson, a cultural history professor at St. John's University's Rome campus and a design studio instructor for the Iowa State University College of Design Rome Program, will speak about the importance of sensory considerations for design in a lecture at Iowa State.
Patterson will present "Sense of Place: The Sensory Lessons of Rome" at 5 p.m. Saturday, March 7, in Kocimski Auditorium, room 101 College of Design. Part of the ISU College of Design Rome Program Lecture Series, her talk is free and open to the public.
Patterson's research focuses on the essential perception of built environments, ancient to contemporary. Deeply influenced by the sensory elements and symbolic dimensions of historic European cities, and Rome in particular—where she has studied, practiced and taught in architecture and design—she investigates and advocates design considerations beyond the visual. In this age of increasingly virtual design and representation, Patterson will use "the haptic experience of Rome as a case study in sensory immersion to inform and inspire design."
Patterson currently is teaching an intensive, multidisciplinary cultural history course on the city of Rome for St. John's University in Rome. She taught interior design studio courses for the ISU College of Design Rome Program in fall 2013 and fall 2014.
Patterson holds a bachelor of architectural studies with university honors (2005), a university teaching certificate (2008) and a master of architecture with Royal Architecture Institute of Canada honors (2009) from the University of Waterloo, Ontario.
She has been an intern architect with 3TI Progetti Group, Rome; and Moore Architecture, Matthew Woodruff Architecture and DA Architects and Planners, all in Vancouver, British Columbia. She taught previous studio courses at the Sapienza University of Rome Department of Architecture and Design, Rome; Pratt Institute School of Architecture, Rome; and University of Waterloo School of Architecture, Rome. She also has led student field trips and workshops in Germany, Spain and throughout Italy, including the Venice Architecture Biennale.
Patterson's lecture will follow the Rome Student and Family Orientation for participants in the fall 2015 ISU College of Design Rome Program. It is presented in conjunction with the College of Design Rome Show of work by 67 students majoring in graphic design, interior design and integrated studio arts who studied with the Rome Program last fall.
