AMES, Iowa — Iowa State University interior design senior Alexandra "Ali" Collins, Johnston, received an honorable mention in the second annual Steelcase NEXT Student Design Competition. Five semi-finalists and five honorable mentions were selected from among 800 entries.

The competition challenged junior- and senior-level undergraduate students enrolled in accredited interior design programs to create the "NEXT" education environment by exploring how space can better support learning and improve student outcomes.

In her design for the fictitious NEXT University, Collins sought to create spaces that helped students, faculty and visitors "feel empowered, prepared, supported and capable," she said. She also aimed for a relationship between space, furniture, technology and people that fostered both internal and interpersonal connections. And she used the rhythm of color and light together with "sinuous lines, perception of depth, gradient values and textiles" to guide movement through the spaces.

Collins completed the project in the fall 2014 interior design office design studio taught by associate professor Cigdem Akkurt. She will receive a custom-ordered Think chair from Steelcase.
