AMES, Iowa — Tom Kundig, FAIA, an award-winning principal with Seattle-based Olson Kundig Architects and one of the most recognized architects in the United States, will present the 2014 Charles E. "Chick" Herbert Lecture in Architecture Wednesday, Dec. 3, at Iowa State University.
In "Tom Kundig Works," Kundig will share his origins and influences and how they have shaped his work. A discussion to follow will focus on his work with buildings and landscape, the nature of community and the craft of building. Kundig's free, public presentation will be at 5:30 p.m. in Kocimski Auditorium, room 101 College of Design.
Over the past three decades, Kundig has received some of the world's highest design honors, including a 2008 National Design Award from the Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum and a 2007 Academy Award in Architecture from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. In 2014, he was included in Architectural Digest's AD100 list of the top 100 architects and interior designers in the world, and in 2012, he was inducted into Interior Design magazine's Hall of Fame. In 2011, Kundig was named one of The Wallpaper* 150, a list of the 150 people who have most influenced, inspired and improved the way we live, work and travel.
Among Kundig's recent projects are the Tacoma (Wash.) Art Museum's Haub Gallery, a 16,000-square-foot addition designed to house the museum's Haub Western Art collection; Art Stable, an urban infill project on the site of a former horse stable in the rapidly developing South Lake Union neighborhood of Seattle; the Pierre, a personal residence in Washington's San Juan Islands nestled into the property's stone outcropping; and Charles Smith Wines Tasting Room and World Headquarters in Walla Walla, Wash., designed to match the winemaker's "rock and roll style."
Kundig's work has received scores of design awards—including 10 National Design Awards from the American Institute of Architects—and has appeared in hundreds of publications worldwide, including The New York Times, The Telegraph, Architectural Record, Financial Times, Architectural Digest and The Wall Street Journal, and countless books. His work can be found on five continents, including a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Dachstein, Austria.
Kundig is a frequent guest speaker at universities and conferences thoughout the US and abroad. He has held numerous distinguished chairs and guest critic positions at the University of Southern California, Syracuse University and Harvard University, among others, and served as the John G. Williams Distinguished Professor in the Fay Jones School of Architecture at the University of Arkansas.
The Charles E. "Chick" Herbert Lecture was established in 2010 in memory of 1951 Iowa State architectural engineering alumnus Chick Herbert, FAIA, the founding principal of Herbert Lewis Kruse Blunck Architecture (HLKB) in Des Moines and recipient of the 2007 Distinguished Alumni Award, the highest honor given to Iowa State alumni by the ISU Alumni Association. It is part of the ISU Department of Architecture's fall 2014 lecture series.
