ISU BPMI students, alumni honored in 30th anniversary exhibition

AMES, Iowa — Five Iowa State University students and four alumni were honored with awards in the "Before and After: BPMI 30th Anniversary Student and Alumni Exhibition" now on display at the ISU College of Design.
Awards were presented during the Biological/Pre-Medical Illustration Program's 30th anniversary banquet Friday, Oct. 2, in the college's Lyle E. Lightfoot Forum.
The student show runs through Sunday, Oct. 12, on the second floor of the Design Building on the west side of the Iowa State campus. The building is open and the work is viewable 24 hours a day. The alumni show runs through 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21, in Gallery 181, first floor of the Design Building. Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays or by appointment. Admission is free.
Both the student and alumni awards were judged by a panel representing the four medical illustration/visualization graduate programs in North America. Judges were Bill Andrews, director of the Medical Illustration Graduate Program at Georgia Regents University, Augusta; John Daugherty, director of the Biomedical Visualization Graduate Program at the University of Illinois at Chicago; Stuart Janzen, research associate and sessional lecturer in the Biomedical Communications Graduate Program at the University of Toronto Mississauga; and Corrine Sandone, director of the Medical and Biological Illustration Graduate Program at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore.
Winners in the student category included:
- First place: "Into the Woods I & II," Andrea Schmitz, senior in BPMI, Waverly
- Second place: "Cold and Unknown," Christina Sidorowych, senior in BPMI, Lake Zurich, Ill.
- Third place (tie): "Puzzle Jar," Alexander Mykris, senior in BPMI, Cedar Rapids, and "Three Feathers," Shawna Snyder, senior in BPMI, Cambridge
- Honorable mention: "Still Life," Theresa Bryant, freshman in pre-BPMI, Lenexa, Kan.
Alumni winners included:
- First place: "Sinusitis," Kate Burnett Galloway, senior medical illustrator at KTB Studios, LLC, Fort Collins, Colo., bachelor of arts in BPMI, 2005
- Second place: "Reverse TEE: Reverse Transesophageal Echocardiogram for Visualizing the Epidural Space," David Cheney, medical illustrator at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN, bachelor of arts in BPMI, 2005
- Third place (tie): "The Library," Cheryl Jacobsen, freelance artist and adjunct assistant professor at the University of Iowa, Iowa City, bachelor of science in biological illustration individual major, 1984; and "Toucans," Steve Tank, multimedia artist with iMed Studios, Ames, bachelor of arts in BPMI, 1995
The student exhibition features 136 works of art by 40 pre-BPMI and BPMI students.
The alumni exhibition features 102 artworks by 46 entrants. The work ranges from studio art to professional medical and scientific illustrations and animations.
"The student exhibition reflects the classroom discipline, in both art and science, required to achieve the excellent communication, scientific accuracy and artistic aesthetics demonstrated in the alumni exhibition," said Dean Biechler, coordinator of the BPMI Program and a lecturer in integrated studio arts at Iowa State.
The interdepartmental undergraduate major in biological/pre-medical illustration at Iowa State is a shared program of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the College of Design. Students take a mix of courses focused on the natural sciences in LAS and studio art in Design to learn to produce scientifically accurate and aesthetically pleasing work, including illustrations, paintings, computer animations, sculptures and other art forms.
Fewer than a dozen U.S. schools offer similar undergraduate majors, and Iowa State has one of the longest-running programs of this type in the nation. About half of ISU BPMI graduates complete master's degrees to become certified medical illustrators. (All four North American graduate programs accepted Iowa State’s graduates in 2013.) Others go into scientific visualization or related fields, publishing, software design, medicine, dentistry, podiatry and biochemistry, and some become full-time artists.
