ISU architecture lecturer receives inaugural AIA Iowa Young Architect Award

AMES, Iowa — Jessica Terrill, a lecturer in architecture at Iowa State University, is the first recipient of the Young Architect Award presented by the Iowa chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA Iowa).
The inaugural award recognizes an AIA Iowa member who has been licensed no longer than 10 years and showcases exceptional leadership and significant contributions to the profession. Terrill was honored Oct. 15 at the AIA Iowa/Central States Regional Convention in Des Moines.
As an architect with Substance Architecture in Des Moines, Terrill's design projects have received four AIA Iowa Design Awards and three AIA Central States Region Design Awards. She was the project architect for the just-completed Wells Fargo cafeteria and training center in West Des Moines, the interior renovation of the Faegre Baker Daniels law office in Des Moines and the award-winning UNI Multimodal Transportation Facility in Cedar Falls.
Since 2008, Terrill has served as a member of the Iowa Architect magazine editorial board and recently was elected the first woman editor in the magazine's 60-year history. She has chaired committees for AIA Iowa's annual conventions, hosted panel discussions for the nonprofit Iowa Women in Architecture (iaWia) organization and helped develop best practices standards for the design professions.
In nominating Terrill for the Young Architect Award, Substance Architecture Principals Tim Hickman and Paul Mankins noted that "she augments [her] design skills with a unique expertise related to the integration of public art and architecture." A strong advocate for the arts, Terrill has collaborated with nationally renowned artists to implement multiple public art projects, including installation of two major works by Jun Kaneko at the intersection of Court Avenue and the Des Moines River in Des Moines. She helps develop short-term public art projects throughout central Iowa as a member of the Greater Des Moines Public Art Foundation's ProjectSPACES subcommittee.
Terrill also is teaching a fourth-year architectural design studio on "creative placemaking” at Iowa State this fall, "modeling excellence and inspiring the next generation of architects," Hickman and Mankins said.
Terrill holds a Bachelor of Science in design/architectural studies (2001) and a Master of Architecture (2003), both from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She is a LEED Accredited Professional. Prior to joining Substance Architecture in 2007, she was an intern architect with Herbert Lewis Kruse Blunck Architecture.
