AMES, Iowa — Jimenez Lai, an assistant professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago and founder of Bureau Spectacular—which engages the design of architecture through storytelling, cartoon narratives, installations, models and small buildings—will speak Wednesday, Nov. 6, at Iowa State University.
Lai's presentation on "Cartoonish Architecture" will be at 5:30 p.m. in the Kocimski Auditorium, room 101 College of Design. He will share a series of projects, photographs, cartoons, movies and anecdotes that outline several interrelated topics—rotation, projection, proportion, posture, figuration, politics, ground, narration, characters, etc.
Part of the ISU Department of Architecture's Architecture Advisory Council Lecture Series, the event is free and open to the public.
Before founding Bureau Spectacular, Lai worked for MOS, AVL, REX and OMA/Rem Koolhaas in Toronto, Rotterdam and New York. He received a Graham Foundation grant to create Citizens of No Place: An Architectural Graphic Novel (Princeton Architectural Press, 2012), a collection of short stories on architecture and urbanism represented using manga-style storyboards. A second draft of this book has been archived at the New Museum as part of the "Younger than Jesus" show.
Lai won the Debut Award at the 2013 Lisbon Architecture Triennale and will represent Taiwan at the 2014 Venice Architecture Biennale. He was awarded a 2012 Architectural League Prize for Young Architects and Designers. He holds a Master of Architecture from the University of Toronto.
