Internationally known graphic designer Michael Braley to speak at ISU Oct. 24

(image) AMES, Iowa — Iowa State University College of Design alumnus Michael Braley (BFA 1993 Graphic Design), creative director at Shatterbox in Lexington, Ky., will speak at ISU Thursday, Oct. 24.

Braley will present "Hindsight," a look at his 20 years of brand, print and packaging design experience, at 7 p.m. in 2055 Hoover Hall.

Prior to his position with Shatterbox, Braley worked in New York for six years— including two years as design director at VSA Partners, Inc.—and was a member of Cahan & Associates, San Francisco, for nine years. He taught typography at the California College of the Arts and has lectured and led workshops at universities and professional design organizations throughout the U.S.

Braley's clients have included Aeropostale, Alliance for American Manufacturing, American Express, AIGA, Effen Vodka, the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, IBM and Tanqueray. His work has been recognized internationally and is in the permanent collections of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Denver Art Museum, Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design, and the Museum fur Kunst und Gewerbe in Hamburg, Germany. It also has appeared in numerous publications and exhibitions, including American Advertising Federation National ADDY Awards, Art Directors Club of New York, British Design and Art Direction, Cannes Design Lions, CLIO Awards, London International Awards, Type Directors Club, AIGA Communication Graphics, AR100 Show, Communication Arts, Graphis, I.D., The One Show and Print.

Braley's lecture is cosponsored by the Department of Graphic Design and College of Design. While on campus, Braley also will teach a two-workshop on identity design for graphic design students from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24, and Friday, Oct. 25, in Gallery 181, College of Design. The workshop is sponsored by the Graphic Design Student Association.
