Internal Research Grants
The College of Design provides the following internal opportunities for faculty and staff to apply for research funding.
BNIM, an award-winning architecture and design firm with offices in Des Moines, Kansas City and San Diego, sponsors the College of Design BNIM Regenerative Design Challenge to support multidisciplinary faculty research in the areas of sustainability and regenerative design. Funding of $10,000 over one calendar year is available to faculty and/or staff within the College of Design, including tenured and tenure-track faculty, lecturers, senior lecturers and professional and scientific staff. A minimum of two co-principal investigators must be from two separate College of Design departments.
Please note: The award cycle for 2024 will be posted later in 2023.
Applications submitted for the 2023 Award cycle are under review for the 3RD BNIM CHALLENGE AWARD APPLICATION BNIM-Call-for-Proposals-2023
All applicants will be notified on March 24th on the award selection.

PAST RECIPIENTS
1st BNIM Challenge Award: “Building a Community: Homes for Transitioning Young Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD),” aims to contribute positively to a community’s social, economic and environmental needs by addressing two main issues: how to better engage with ideas of inclusivity and well-being in regenerative architecture, and how design for ASD can assist in rebuilding and renewing communities. Awarded to Julie Irish, interior design; Daniel Kuhlmann, community and regional planning; and Andrea Wheeler, architecture; and associate professors Diane Al Shihabi, interior design, and Mikesch Muecke, architecture. 2nd BNIM Challenge Award: “A Best Practice Manual for Aging in Place: Revitalizing Small Communities for Aging Population in Iowa.” Awarded to Daejin Kim’s senior design studio (ARTID 465: Design studio) and Dr. Sung duck Lee’s URBD532: Urban design methods courses.
