ISU integrated studio art seniors to present work in annual BFA exhibition April 16–22

04/07/21

AMES, Iowa — Iowa State University seniors in integrated studio arts will display their work April 16–22 in the College of Design’s Gallery 181 and online in Gallery 181V.

“Emergence” will showcase artwork by 20 students who will graduate with a bachelor of fine arts in May, August or December 2021. Each senior submitted up to eight pieces for the BFA show, two to three of which will be installed in Gallery 181 with the rest presented virtually.

Hours and reception

The exhibition will feature comic book illustrations, ceramics, furniture, paintings and metalwork. Gallery hours for the in-person show are 9 a.m.–5 p.m. weekdays. In lieu of an opening reception, a student-produced video will be shared as part of the virtual exhibition on Gallery 181V.

All of the students exhibiting work are part of the senior seminar/exhibition course taught by Jennifer Drinkwater, assistant professor of art and visual culture. The class teaches students in their final year how to professionally exhibit and promote their work.

Riley Gunderson, public relations manager for the exhibition, said senior studio participants chose the exhibition title after reflecting on events from the past year.

“‘Emergence’ was fitting for a spring show and us emerging out of being in a virtual environment and making changes due to COVID,” said Gunderson, from Lawrenceville, Georgia. “Along with that idea, we have a green color palette for the exhibition poster with a plant and photos of the artwork in the leaves.”

Gunderson, who will graduate in May, selected pieces that demonstrate her exploration of multiple media throughout her time at ISU.

“My style is a lot of collage and layers with a focus on female subject matter and mental health concerns. This year, I had a senior independent study [in which I created a] series of three books that will be in the show,” she said.

“It’s really exciting to see everyone’s developed work. We’ve been together for so long, and we’re all in different studios, but it’s great getting to see things come together.”
