College of Design students honored in Apex juried exhibition

AMES, Iowa — Six College of Design students took top honors in the 2020 Apex Student Juried Exhibit, a virtual exhibition hosted by the Iowa State University Memorial Union.
This year’s show was juried by Jeremy Chen, assistant professor of art at Grinnell College and founding member of The Moving Crew. Chen accepted 41 artworks by 28 students for the exhibition, which was moved online when the university shifted to virtual instruction in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
James Casad, senior in integrated studio arts, won Best in Show for his brass sculpture titled “Orifice II.” Merit Awards went to industrial design senior Joe Fentress for “Thea” (ash and fabric lamp); industrial design senior Nathan Miklo for “Form-Y” (ash and aluminum bicycle); and graphic design graduate student Zach Stewart for “Has the Globe Become the New Swoosh?” (risograph zine).
Honorable mentions were awarded to graphic design senior Christian D’Cruz for “G00nD0ck Future” (mixed-media painting) and industrial design sophomore Tristan Beilharz for “Looking Back” (pen and ink drawing).
