Identity, belonging and migration are topics of MFA exhibition Nov. 12–Dec. 5 at ISU Design on Main Gallery

11/06/19

AMES, Iowa — An exhibition exploring the uniqueness of migrant artists’ cultural identity and their social and cultural impact on society will be on display Nov. 12–Dec. 5 at the Iowa State University Design on Main Gallery, 203 Main St. in downtown Ames. A public reception will be from 5–7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 14.

“Impact: Identity, Belonging and Migration” is curated by Sang Eun Lee, an Iowa State graduate student in graphic design from Seoul, South Korea, as part of her master of fine arts thesis. The show features work by Lee and 13 other international artists who came to the United States for education or to resettle. Artwork includes paintings, prints, sculpture, poetry, digital and video works.

“Art makes an impact on society and allows people from different backgrounds to transcend differences through image, sound and story. Bringing art together an exhibition enables people to experience the works together in communities, to respond and connect,” Lee said.

“Migration and art are essential elements to understand life, culture and creativity in current America. The ‘Impact’ exhibition addresses the importance of understanding the diversity that exists in our communities and celebrates our differences as they have become an integral part of our national identity.”
