Wearables Design Exhibit on display Aug. 14-24 at Ames Public Library

08/12/19

AMES, Iowa — Wearable designs created by Iowa State University students will be displayed Aug. 14–24 at the Ames Public Library.

Thirteen projects by teams of first-year College of Design students in the spring 2019 Design Studies 102 studio course are displayed in the library’s atrium, grand staircase lobby, gallery and studio. These are a small sample of the nearly 50 designs by more than 200 students that were showcased in the Wearables Design Show in April.

In their class, students were asked to choose pieces of music to respond to and translate into designs that explored human interaction and allowed them to experiment with different materials and fabrication processes. They used poster board, fishing line, a bed skirt, balloons, a bike tire, a rake, plastic cup lids, duct tape and more to create their wearable designs — which they then shared in a runway show with lights, a DJ and judges.

Designs on display in the Wearables Design Exhibit at the Ames Public Library include:

First floor (lobby and atrium)

Aquarium
The Messengers (Rhythmic Narrative award winner)
Dichotomy of Thought (Kinetic award winner)
The Cloud
Ostinatos (Honorable Mention)
Serenity

Second floor (gallery and studio)

String Theory
Luxe (Light & Shadow award winner)
WVGL
Great Bird of the Galaxy (Vibrant award winner)
Hens & Roosters

Visitors are invited to pick up a guide and view these unique wearables during regular library hours: 1–5 p.m. Sunday; 9 a.m.–9 p.m. Monday–Thursday; 9 a.m.–6 p.m. Saturday–Sunday. Questions may be directed to Patience Lueth, associate teaching professor in architecture and Design Studies 102 studio co-coordinator; or Susan Jasper, community engagement specialist.
