Meet the Director of Graduate Education

Heidi Hohmann

Heidi is the director of graduate education and an associate professor in the Department of Landscape Architecture. Before entering academia, she was a preservation landscape architect working in both private and public practice, including with the National Park Service. 

Heidi researches and writes about landscape history, focusing on the years 1880–1930. She most recently completed landscape preservation plans for the Alvin Miller House designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in Charles City, Iowa, and for a 1930s historic Japanese garden in Muscatine, Iowa. These days, Heidi is working on a book about the history of the Minneapolis Park System.  

Discussing the Master of Landscape Architecture program, Heidi says, “Our graduate program is tiny, but mighty. With a low student–to–faculty ratio, you’ll get lots of personal attention in our program. Our department is known for producing students who are grounded in theory but are office-ready workers who have their feet on the ground, or rather, the landscape. Our department is launching a new initiative focusing on rural landscape architecture — stay tuned!”
