The ISU Department of History and Sustainable Peace Faculty Learning Community will host the 2023 Peace and Justice Studies Association annual conference Sept. 15–17 at Iowa State. Faculty, staff and students are invited to propose papers that engage with questions of peace as outlined in the call for papers.

You may submit individual papers; panels of three-four papers/presenters linked thematically; films, creative works or art presentations; roundtable discussions; and teaching/skill-building interactive workshops. Submit your proposal(s) online.

The Office of the Vice President for Research will host a workshop on “Tools, Tips, and Tricks for Putting Science of Team Science Research into Practice” from 2–4 p.m. Thursday, April 20, in the Memorial Union Cardinal Room. This workshop is open to all faculty, staff and students of the Iowa State community who may benefit from tools to help manage teams.

Ellen Fisher and Hannah Love from Divergent Science LLC will share their experience of incorporating team science tools and techniques into teams. Fisher and Love will provide great examples and ways to work these into any size team. Participants will leave with critical components to a team agreement plan, including aspects for decision making, authorship, communication and onboarding plans.

Employees with dependents on their medical, dental or vision plans must provide documentation verifying their eligibility by Friday, June 2. The Iowa State test center location at 2552 Gilman will be open May 15–Aug. 4 to host summer course exams. Instructors interested in using the testing services for on-campus or remote proctored exams are encouraged to register their course(s) and add assessment dates as soon as possible. Open for its sixth round of funding, the Miller Open Education Mini-Grant Program encourages instructor innovation in adopting and creating Open Educational Resources (OER). Three award levels in amounts from $500–$5,000 are available. The call for proposals closes at 11:59 p.m. Monday, April 24.

Interested in digital equity? Attend a Digital Equity Town Hall at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 25, in 0114 Student Innovation Center to help the state of Iowa understand barriers to the digital aspects of Iowa life.

Digital equity focuses on four main areas: internet access, internet affordability, digital devices and device skills. At the event, attendees can expect a short presentation followed by an audience discussion. Part of a two-month-long series, the town hall is hosted by the state of Iowa’s Office of the CIO and sponsored by the university’s Information Technology Services.

A new internal careers hub, launched in Workday on April 12, provides a single, simplified tool for current Iowa State employees seeking internal job opportunities. In Workday, internal applicants now can access job postings, personalized job alerts and a centralized report to manage applications more readily. The simplified interface and use of cards make it easier for employees to apply, monitor and track internal jobs.

The Office of the Senior Vice President and Provost will partially cover tuition for the fall edition (Aug. 27–Nov. 18) of the Faculty Success Program, an online mentoring program sponsored by the National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity open to tenured, tenure-track or term faculty. The program teaches faculty the skills to increase their research and writing productivity while maintaining a healthy work-life balance.

Iowa State funds would cover $2,500 toward early registration costs of $4,350 for up to four faculty, and participants would need to cover the rest through other sources (department, college, grants, etc.). Faculty sponsored by the provost’s office are expected to complete all components of the program. Firat Erdim, associate professor and Daniel J. Huberty Faculty Fellow in Architecture, will run a series of “Field Harp Soundings” at the Des Moines Art Center over the next month.

The performances are with a field of 16 single-string electric aeolian harps to be operated by a new set of 16+ volunteers each time, with changing resonators and tunings responding to different weather conditions for each performance.

Volunteers are needed, especially for the final two performances (weather permitting).

Two types of outreach grants, the Fieldstead & Company Endowment for Community Enhancement ($5,000 for one year) and the Curriculum-based Design Outreach Fund (up to $1,500 for one semester), are available to support projects that “inform the proper and artful development of the communities of Iowa and the surrounding region” and to initiate community-partnered studio courses.

BNIM, an award-winning architecture and design firm with offices in Des Moines, Kansas City and San Diego, sponsors the College of Design BNIM Regenerative Design Challenge to support multidisciplinary research in the areas of sustainability and regenerative design.

Funding of $10,000 over one calendar year is available to faculty and/or staff within the College of Design, including tenured, tenure-track and term faculty, and professional and scientific staff. A minimum of two co-principal investigators must be from two separate College of Design departments. Applications are open for fall 2023 and spring 2024 Bogliasco Foundation Fellowships. These month-long, residential fellowships support creative and scholarly work in architecture, archaeology, classics, dance, film/video, history, landscape architecture, literature, music, philosophy, theater and visual arts. The Los Angeles County Museum of Art offers Art + Technology Lab grants of up to $50,000 to support projects that explore artistic applications of emerging technologies and ideas related to technology and culture. The program offers artists and artist collectives financial and in-kind support for new projects with the help of expert partners from the fields of science, technology and engineering. The campus community has more safety options available at its fingertips through the new Iowa State Safe app launched Jan. 19. It replaces ISU Guardian, retains many of Guardian’s safety options, and features easily accessible information about numerous units across campus.

Iowa State Safe is powered by the company contracted to provide the ISU Alert system. Users can download it for free through the Apple App or Google Play stores. Faculty, staff and students can use the app by signing in with their Net-ID and password — which imports information to autofill when service is requested — or as a guest. The first College of Design Innovation and Entrepreneurship Day (I+E Day) will be Friday, Feb. 24. The day will include a presentation by Dean Luis Rico-Gutierrez to students in the Core Design Program about engaging with the “Culture of Care” (8:50–9:40 a.m., 1210 LeBaron); a special edition of the IDRO Friday Research Seminar Series featuring six of the college’s Innovation Fellows and Scholars and our interim director of innovation and entrepreneurship (12:10–1 p.m., 130 Design); and the kick-off to the Dream the Future II student innovation workshop with a presentation by organizers and Innovation Fellows Tina Rice, Jen Hogan and Roman Chikerinets (6 p.m., Kocimski Auditorium). All three main events are open to all to attend.

The Office of the Vice President for Research will sponsor the spring Research in the Round session, “Healthy Iowa,” from 8 a.m.–noon Friday, March 10, at the Memorial Union. This session is intended to be a collaborative setting for discussion of big, bold, interdisciplinary research ideas on a range of topics related to mental, physical and behavioral health and the policies, environments, infrastructure, etc., to support health. Arts, design, humanities and social science faculty and extension specialists are encouraged to participate. Register online by Friday, Feb. 10.

February is American Heart Month. Recent studies publicized by the American Heart Association have shown that survival from cardiac arrest doubled when bystanders stepped in to use a publicly-available automated external defibrillator (AED) rather than wait until emergency responders arrived. Did you know that the College of Design has an AED? It is located in the foyer on the first floor near the Dean’s Office and the corridor to the King Pavilion. Because seconds count in an emergency, why not take a moment and make sure YOU know where our AED is? More information about AEDs, including a helpful video, can be found on ISU Environmental Health and Safety’s website.

The College of Design faculty-staff meetings for the remainder of spring semester will be from noon–1 p.m. Mondays, Feb. 20, March 20 and April 17 in person in 130 Design. There will be no virtual/hybrid meeting.

These meetings have been added to the college’s online events calendar and will be announced in this weekly e-blast for faculty and staff the week before and the day of each meeting. Agendas will be emailed in advance.

Faculty are invited to submit proposals for CEAH Research Grants (three different types of support for research and creative activity), CEAH Digital Scholarship Research Grants of $6,000–$7,000 and CEAH Symposium Grants of $2,000–$10,000 offered by the Center for Excellence in the Arts and Humanities (scroll down page to find each description and link). Artist Ingrid Lilligren, professor of art and visual culture, will host a series of open houses at her studio in downtown Ames to share new work created in fall 2021 as part of an Iowa State University Faculty Professional Development Assignment and in spring 2022, and fired over the course of spring and summer in various kilns.

The “Beauty Project” explores ideas about and meanings of beauty, including objective and subjective – or intersubjective – responses to objects, persons, places, ideas and experiences. View the new pieces and engage in conversation with Lilligren and other visitors during these public open houses scheduled from 2–5 p.m. Saturdays, Nov. 26 and Dec. 3 at Blue Door Studio, 108 5th Street, Ames (entrance on alley).

Each semester, the ART IS 206: Studio Fundamentals: Printmaking course, taught by art and visual culture assistant professor Raluca Iancu, visits Reiman Gardens to collect observational drawings of flora, fauna, sculptures and architecture for an intaglio drypoint project. Student prints from fall 2019 through fall 2022 are on display in the Printmaking in the Gardens exhibition through Thursday, Dec. 15, at Reiman Gardens. Viewing hours are 10 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Monday–Sunday.

With numerous new faculty members joining Iowa State between August 2022 and January 2023, the Office of the Senior Vice President and Provost will host a shorter version of the August orientation in January to give new faculty (tenure-eligible and term) an introduction to some of the fundamental aspects of their new positions at ISU.

The orientation will take place virtually from 1–4:15 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 11, via Zoom. Faculty are encouraged to register for this event in advance. Questions can be directed to SVPP faculty success coordinator Katharine Hensley.

The university’s Professional and Scientific Council is holding a donation drive for the SHOP food pantry through Wednesday, Nov. 30. SHOP intakes its donations by weight and the council’s goal is 1 ton of donations (about 1 pound per staff member). Matt Crain, departmental partner for architecture and interior design in the College of Design, is a member of the P&S Council, and his desk in 146 Design is an official drop-off location for the SHOP donation drive. The Center for Excellence in the Arts and Humanities (CEAH) invites faculty in the arts, design and humanities to an information session on obtaining external research funding. “CEAH Grants and External Funding” will be from noon–1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 16, in 199 Parks Library.

Amy Bix, professor of history, and Kathleen Hilliard, associate professor of history, will share their experiences obtaining external funding for their scholarship. Kirsten Abel, honors and awards coordinator in the Office of the Senior Vice President and Provost, and Annalisa Brandt from ISU’s Grants Hub will speak on external funding strategies and opportunities in the arts, design and humanities. The College of Design Lectures & Exhibitions Committee seeks nominations from faculty, staff and student organizations for speakers for college-level interdisciplinary events for the 2022-23 academic year. The committee will internally vet, rank and recommend up to 6 speakers to expend the annual budget requested from the Dean’s Office. Honorariums for this series are $1,000 with some flexibility for additional funds. You may nominate multiple people; fill out the form for each person you wish to nominate. The nomination deadline is 5 p.m. CT Monday, March 6. 

Miller Faculty Fellowship funds are available to develop innovative approaches to the teaching of existing undergraduate courses or to develop new courses for undergraduates. Any Iowa State tenured, tenure-eligible or term faculty member, or staff member with a teaching appointment, is eligible to apply for a fellowship. Preference will be given to first-time Miller Fellowship applicants.

The Thomas L. Hill Iowa State Conference on Race and Ethnicity (ISCORE) is accepting proposals for presentations on race and ethnicity from faculty, staff and students. Hold the dates for the 2023 ISCORE event, which will be in person Friday, March 3, 2023, with a half-day preconference for faculty and staff Wednesday, March 1. Registration will open Wednesday, Feb. 1. Submit your proposal online by Thursday, Dec. 2.

The Offices of the Senior Vice President and Provost and Vice President for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion seek applications from tenured faculty members to serve as Faculty Fellow for Hispanic/Latino Student Success. The fellow will develop and implement programming to support the academic success of Hispanic and Latino undergraduate, graduate and professional students, and support Iowa State’s engagement with the University Innovation Alliance. The position is open to current, full-time tenured associate and full professors at Iowa State who have been employed by the university for at least five years. Applications are due to Rose McCarty by Friday, Nov. 11.

The Big 12 Faculty Fellowship Program offers faculty the opportunity to travel to member institutions, typically for two weeks, to exchange ideas and research. Faculty members may receive up to $2,500 toward transportation, room and board (awards generally will not exceed $1,500). For fellowship dates between Nov. 1, 2022, and June 30, 2023, applications are due to the Office of the Senior Vice President and Provost by noon Friday, Oct. 14.

The Office of the Senior Vice President and Provost will contribute $2,500 toward early registration costs of $4,250 for up to four tenure-track or tenured faculty in the spring 2023 Faculty Success Program offered by the National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity. Early career faculty will have priority. The 12-week, online mentoring program teaches participants the skills to increase their research and writing productivity while maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Participants need to cover the remaining fee through other sources such as department or college matching funds, professional development funds, grants, startup funds, etc.

Mindfulness sessions with Michelle Flattery are being offered this fall to groups (faculty, staff, student) in the College of Design. Flattery also will offer pop-up programming in the college this semester. The first pop-up session will be from 11:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 16, in the atrium. Watch for an installation in the atrium at the end of this month in conjunction with a pop-up event planned for Wednesday, Sept. 28.

College of Design faculty and staff are encouraged to attend one of four office remodeling visioning workshops scheduled next week (Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2–4 p.m. in 116 Design, 5:30–7:30 p.m. in 416 Design; and Thursday, Sept. 22, 9–11 a.m. and 2–4 p.m., both in 116 Design). Each session will be facilitated by a team from DLR Group that specializes in academic planning. Before attending a session, please consider how current faculty-staff spaces support your best work and what spaces or functions are missing that would enhance your experience. This is your opportunity to share ideas for improving our workspaces.

Open to full-time, tenured faculty members, the Bailey Research Career Development Award fosters research that is innovative (outside of an established research program) and not only increases knowledge but also has practical applications. One or two awards of $50,000 per year for two or three years will be made competitively each fiscal year. Submit an application to the Dean’s Office for internal review by 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 3. The college may forward no more than one application to the university award committee for consideration.

The Catt Center is accepting nominations for its 2023 “Women Impacting ISU” calendar through 11:59 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30. The calendar is open to all individuals who identify as a woman, inclusive of cisgender and transgender identities. Faculty and staff must be employed by the university for the 2023 calendar year to be eligible for nomination. Students graduating in May 2023 may be nominated. The University Honors Program is seeking proposals for spring 2023 Honors seminars. The one- or two-credit courses, offered for a half or full term, allow Honors students to examine topics of current or special interest. Seminars are offered on a pass/fail basis, and enrollment is usually limited to 17 students. The Honors program allocates $500 per seminar for the instructor(s)’ professional development.

This fall, the Office of Admissions is launching its new recruitment marketing campaign, “A Cyclone in the Making,” for prospective students. The “Adventure” theme has served Iowa State well for 15 years, but extensive research has revealed it no longer resonates with today’s students or differentiates Iowa State University from its competitors. Faculty and staff who recruit prospective students and are interested in learning more about the campaign are invited to a general overview during a town hall at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30, in 101 Carver. Seating is limited, so RSVPs are requested via Qualtrics survey.

The Office of the Senior Vice President and Provost has expanded mentoring opportunities for early-career faculty at the rank of assistant professor (term and tenure-eligible) and mid-career faculty at the rank of associate professor (term and tenure-eligible). The Provost’s Office also will pilot a Term Faculty Learning Community for the 2022-2023 academic year.

Recently appointed, promoted and advanced faculty will receive a memo from the Provost’s Office outlining the mentoring opportunities for assistant and associate professors, and term faculty with 1–5 years of employment at Iowa State will receive an invitation to apply for the Term Faculty Learning Community pilot.

Faculty Professional Development Assignments (FPDAs) allow faculty members time to advance work on research and scholarship that is difficult or impossible to perform in conjunction with on-campus responsibilities. The Dean’s Office will accept FPDA proposals for the 2023–2024 academic year from department chairs between Sept. 2–9. Faculty should contact their department chairs for internal departmental submission deadlines.

Design Student Services is launching a new College of Design Student Resources Canvas page, which will highlight helpful resources and centralize important information and news for College of Design students. With the rollout of this new page, we will be retiring the biweekly Design Student News e-blast.

Associate Provost for Academic Programs Ann Marie VanDerZanden has compiled a list of campus resources available to help instructors prepare for the start of classes. The list includes links to multiple resources related to course design and teaching, syllabus preparation and statements, student mental health resources, class attendance policies, prep week policy, Canvas course presence, student engagement recommendations, student resources, and technology in the classroom. Now in its 35th year, The Way Up Conference offers Iowa women in higher education the opportunity to learn, share and network with other women in formal and informal leadership roles as well as those who aspire to move up. This includes professional and scientific staff, faculty members, deans, directors, department chairs and other administrators who identify as women and are seeking to develop further as leaders.

This year’s conference, “Women on The Way Up: Embracing Challenges and Creating Opportunities,” will be Nov. 3-4 at the Bien VenU Conference Center in Cedar Falls. Watch for conference registration materials in September.
