To help develop an understanding of preservation and rehabilitation plans for the former August Home Publishing Company building in Des Moines, students in Associate Professor Diane Al Shihabi‘s fall 2019 ARTID 569D: Preservation class visited Taliesen, a UNESCO World Heritage Site; the Wisconsin State Capitol, a National Historic Landmark; the Wisconsin State Historical Society, University of Wisconsin-Madison Memorial Union and UW-Madison Agriculture Hall, all on the National Register of Historic Places; the UW-Madison Henry Mall Historic District; the Wisconsin State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) and the State Historic Preservation Office of Iowa; and the former August Publishing House building at 2200 Grand Avenue in Des Moines.

At the Wisconsin State Capitol, students toured public spaces and principal rooms, including the Senate, Assembly and Supreme Court Chambers, and private offices of the Supreme Court and Senate President, where they were able to see Al Shihabi’s furniture, interior and decorative finish designs for the interior, which she developed during the capitol’s restoration and renovation project completed in 2002. The Wisconsin Historical Society’s deputy state historic preservation officer, Daina Penkiunas, spoke with the students about the role of the SHPO’s office and how it  can help interior designers are preservation projects. At Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin estate, students toured the Hillside School and Theatre, Midway Farms, and Wright’s home and studio.

In Des Moines, students met with 2200 Grand Avenue’s facilities manager, Kurt Johnson; realtor Peter Brown, and Balance Autism staff members Scott Atwood and Jessica Felice. The class is developing rehabilitation plans for the building as part of the interdisciplinary BNIM Challenge Grant project and will integrate preservation standards and regenerative architecture concepts in interior plans for young adults with autism.
