Advising
Academic Advisors and Faculty Mentors
The College of Design uses a team-based approach to advising in which students will have access to a professional academic advisor as well as a faculty mentor. The two roles are different, and understanding what each one does will allow you to make the most of the expertise they can offer you.
Professional Academic Advising
All design students will be assigned a professional advisor from orientation through graduation. The professional advisors have expertise in areas related to student success. Your professional advisor should be your first point of contact for questions related to:
- curriculum requirements, progress toward degree
- degree audit issues, making changes or substitutions in your program
- connecting you to resources, programs and support systems
- registration, general scheduling questions
- forms, add/drop slips, changing/ declaring majors/minors, reinstatement
- university and college academic policies and procedures.

Faculty Mentoring
Design students will also be assigned a faculty mentor. This happens typically at the beginning of the third year in your major (second year for ISA and fourth year for ARC). Your faculty mentor is an expert in your field and therefore can offer valuable insight and advice. Connecting with your faculty mentor gives you the opportunity to benefit from their expertise; we encourage you to meet with them each semester. The mento role will vary slightly by department. However, these items are among the things your faculty mentor can advise on:
- Major/specialization course selections
- Honors program of study
- Research, experience learning, internship, study abroad opportunities
- Determining appropriate substitute courses
- Career and personal goals
- Graduate school
