Summer/Fall 2018 Course Material Orders

The University Book Store is accepting course material orders from faculty for summer and fall 2018. Submit course material requirements and recommendations to your designated department academic coordinator or directly to book store staff. Read more

FTG Proposals Due Friday

Foreign travel grant proposals for the travel period of May 16, 2018, through Jan. 19, 2019, are due from departments to the Dean's Office by 5 p.m. this Friday, March 23. Read more

College Faculty-Staff Meeting

The next College of Design faculty-staff meeting will be from noon to 1 p.m. Monday, March 26, in 130 Design.


Faculty and staff are encouraged to register for an ISU ADVANCE workshop on "Effective Teams: Navigating Both Gender and Cultural Diversity" by Kathrin Zippel, award-winning author and associate professor of sociology at Northeastern University, from 9:15 - 10:45 a.m. or 1:15 - 2:45 p.m. Monday, March 26, in the MU Sun Room. Reminder: ISU Research Day

The second annual ISU Research Day will be from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, March 27, at the Memorial Union. The event will feature a keynote address, poster session, lightning talks, resource fair and networking opportunities as well as new opportunities, including professionally recorded videos of all faculty talks. Chicago-based sound expert Eric Leonardson will present "Advances in Eco-Sensing and Soundscape" at 5 p.m. Monday, March 26, in 130 Design. He will also lead a workshop on "Listening Above and Below; Eco-Sensing DIY" from 2-4 p.m. March 26 at the Design on Main Gallery. Read more

Shannon Nichol, FASLA, PLA, LEED AP, a founding partner of award-winning landscape architecture firm Gustafson Guthrie Nichol, Seattle, will present "Drawing and Building Landscape," the 2018 P.H. Elwood Lecture in Landscape Architecture, at 6 p.m. Monday, March 26, in 2055 Hoover. Read more

Ledges Exhibition

"Common Channel: Responses to Ledges State Park," an exhibition featuring three-dozen works by 14 College of Design faculty and graduate students, is on display March 17-April 28 at the Boone History Center. A public reception will be from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Friday, April 13, and an artists' talk will be from 5-7 p.m. Friday, April 20. Read more

MFA Thesis Exhibition

"Traces: A Farm in Eastern Iowa," an exhibition of photographs by Rachel Deutmeyer, graduate student in integrated visual arts, will be on display April 5-15 at the ISU Design on Main Gallery. A reception will be from 6-8 p.m. Friday, April 6. Read more

Shelby Doyle, Leslie Forehand, Erin Hunt, Nick Senske

Architecture assistant professors Shelby Doyle and Nick Senske, lecturer Leslie Forehand and Computation and Construction Lab associate Erin Hunt (BArch 2017 Architecture) won an innovation award from the International Masonry Institute for their latest project: 3D-printed ceramic facades that can be used to cool buildings. "Disrupt/Displace: Translating Territory," an article by Shelby Doyle, assistant professor of architecture and the Daniel J. Huberty Faculty Fellow in Architecture, and Leslie Forehand, lecturer in architecture, has been published in the Journal of Architectural Education, Volume 72, Issue 1: A/To Project. Read more

Sungduck Lee

Sungduck Lee, a lecturer in architecture and urban design, and Emily Talen, professor of urbanism at the University of Chicago, have co-authored Design for Social Diversity, 2nd Edition (Routledge, 2018), which addresses the physical requirements of socially diverse neighborhoods. Read more

Seda McKilligan

"Overcoming design fixation in idea generation," a paper by Seda McKilligan, associate professor of industrial design, with colleagues at the University of Limerick, Ireland, and the University of Michigan, has been accepted by the Design Research Society international conference, DRS2018 Limerick. Read more

Mitchell Squire

"Smoke (no. 1)" (graphite, salvaged law-enforcement paper targets shot through, in artist-made painted plywood frame, 2015) by Mitchell Squire, professor of architecture, has been acquired by the Minneapolis Institute of Art for its permanent collection. Read more

Andrea Wheeler

Andrea Wheeler, assistant professor of architecture, presented a paper on "Plant Ethics or an Environment for the Birth of the New Human? An Exploration in in Radical Ethics for Sustainable Architecture” in the “Ecological Ethics and the Role of the Architect” session at the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) 106th Annual Meeting March 15-17 in Denver.
