Iowa State University
Answers to FAQs about ISU Design West Studio and the Sioux City Area

How long will I take classes there? How do I enroll?
Classes typically cover a full academic semester (fall or spring), but some may be extended studio visits during which students work on projects in the community. You enroll in the ISU Design West Studio through the university's AccessPlus system, as you do any of your other classes. Your instructors will let you know if you are going to work/study in Sioux City during the semester.

Is the plan to have ISU Design students living in Sioux City during the semester?
That is the plan for the future! This is a great undertaking, but faculty and staff are working to try to make this happen in the near future.

If I currently live in the Sioux City area and would like to pursue a field of Design, how could I take an undergraduate core course at ISU Design West?
If you are an advanced high school student, college or university student, or non-traditional potential student at ISU and would like to enroll in an undergraduate core course, please contact Susan Fey, susanfey@iastate.edu, 712-258-8999 for more information.

If I am an ISU student who would like to intern in Sioux City, is that possible?
There are many opportunities to work at local architecture and design firms, and they would love to have you apply! Feel free to contact Susan Fey, susanfey@iastate.edu, 712-258-8999 for more information on local firms.

I am just about to graduate and just found out about ISU Design West in Sioux City. Are there opportunities in that area for designers and architects?
Many of the firms in the area are hiring, and they would love to see an ISU graduate apply. Once you are here working in Sioux City, there are opportunities to get involved at ISU Design West, from student review sessions to high school student workshops run by the College of Design.

What is the significance of Historic Fourth Street?
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Fourth Street Historic District contains the best concentration of late 19th-century commercial buildings in Sioux City. The area boasts a wide range of activities for all ages year round. There are great restaurants, fun shopping, and it's the best place in Sioux City for nightlife. In the summer, weekly concerts are held on The Promenade, which features a beautiful fountain. Additionally, a cinema is located right at the end of Historic Fourth.

Can you tell me more about Sioux City?
Sioux City is on the Missouri River and borders South Dakota and Nebraska. A river town that once grew and thrived as home of one of the largest stockyards in the world, Sioux City has had a reemergence of entrepreneurship, development and restoration. Historic buildings that celebrate the community's rich past and unique architecture are found throughout the city.

In recent years the beautiful downtown Orpheum Theatre was renovated and features the Sioux City Symphony and a wide range of performers from Tony Bennett to Sheryl Crow. And, sitting only a block away from the Orpheum is the incredible William Steel-designed Sioux City Courthouse.
