Debra Satterfield
Associate Professor and Interim Director, Graphic Design
Co-founder, Design Information Research Group ![]() Professor Satterfield received a BS degree with majors in computer
science and art from Morningside College in Sioux City and a Master of
Fine Arts (MFA) degree with a specialization in graphic design from
Iowa State University. She teaches graduate and undergraduate graphic
design at Iowa State.
Satterfield has presented her graphic design research nationally
and internationally on topics including the design of educational
materials for children with developmental disabilities, design for
behavioral change, design for social inclusion, and experience design
for healthcare at numerous conferences, including the American
Institute for Graphic Arts (AIGA), the International Association for
Societies of Design Research (IASDR), the International Visual Literacy
Association (IVLA), and the Design Research Society (DRS).
She is currently conducting collaborative research with the Mayo Clinic on the
evaluation and design of medical decision aids. She is also working with colleagues at Iowa State on the researching and designing games for social inclusion for children with autism spectrum disorders. Ann Sobiech-Munson Assistant Professor, Architecture / Art and Design
Director, Core Design Program
![]() Professor Sobiech-Munson received a BA in English and Spanish from
Central College in 1991 and a Master of Architecture (MArch) degree
from Iowa State in 2000. She completed her internship with Herbert
Lewis Kruse Blunck Architecture in Des Moines (2001 AIA Firm of the
Year). At HLKB, Sobiech-Munson worked on projects at the Des Moines Art
Center, Terrace Hill and Cornell College, where the Youngker
Hall/Kimmel Theatre project received both state (2004) and regional
(2005) AIA Honor Awards. She began teaching at Iowa State in 2004, with
courses ranging from architecture studios and professional practice in
architecture to writing about architecture, and multidisciplinary
beginning design.
With colleague Tom Leslie, she received a Creative Achievement Award from the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) in 2005-06 for the development of an innovative writing seminar for architecture students; in spring 2007, two students working under her mentorship won their category in the International Bamboo Competition for a custom residential design. Current areas of research focus on writing as design practice and beginning design pedagogy. Beginning in fall 2007, Sobiech-Munson was appointed as director of the Core Design Program, the first-year curriculum for all undergraduate students in the College of Design.
