Eligibility
This exhibition is open to all alumni from all departments and programs that are or have been in the Iowa State University College of Design: architecture, art and design, art education, biological and pre-medical illustration, community and regional planning, graphic design, integrated studio arts, interior design and landscape architecture. This includes those who may have graduated when disciplines were known as applied art, architectural engineering, etc.

Media
All media are eligible. All work must fit through a standard 2'8” x 6'8” door frame. Installations will be considered, but space limitations and impact on the gallery environment will be determining factors. Work requiring special audio/video equipment not provided by the entrant may be rejected if equipment is not readily available through the Iowa State University Information Technology Services office.

Submission Guidelines
There is no entry fee. Each College of Design alumnus/a may submit up to two entries of original work completed since 2003. Submission of your most recently executed work is strongly encouraged. Digital/electronic files only will be accepted (no slides) for the selection process.

To enter, register here. Once you have registered, you may then submit entries one of two ways:
  1. Fill out our online entry form and upload your images. The online entry form appears automatically when you register. You will see a screen saying "Upload Project Information" and can proceed from there.
  2. Print out and mail the completed entry form (.pdf) with images, artist statement and resume on CD. CDs will not be returned and will become the property of the ISU College of Design.

Submit up to three images/views per entry. Images may be submitted as JPEGs online or on a CD that can be read on both Mac and Windows operating systems. Please label the CD and case clearly with your full name.

Image Requirements
  • Images must be clear, professionally presented, and accurately represent the work.
  • Each JPEG must be no larger than 1024 pixels in any direction.
  • Image resolution must be between 72 and 100 dpi.
  • Files must be RGB, not CMYK.
  • Each file should be labeled with the entrant's last name followed by a period, first initial, underscore, and number corresponding to the entry, for example:
SMITH.J_1.jpg (image corresponding to first entry)
SMITH.J_2.jpg (image corresponding to second entry)
For multiple views of a single work, use SMITH.J_1A.jpg, SMITH.J_1B.jpg, etc.
  • For presentation boards or other materials that represent complex projects, PDF files will be accepted. Individual PDF files should not exceed 5MB.
Each entrant must also submit a short resume (up to three pages) and an artist/philosophy statement (one page) as PDF files, either online or on CD. Label files in the following format: SMITH.J_Resume.pdf, SMITH.J_Statement.pdf.

Entry Deadline
Completed entries must be received by 5 p.m. Friday, January 30, 2009.

Guest Curator
All submissions will be reviewed by the guest curator for the exhibition: David Revere McFadden, chief curator and vice president for programs and collections at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York City. He is also the president of the International Council of Museums' Decorative Arts and Design Committee. He previously served as curator for decorative arts and assistant director for collections and research at the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum. McFadden will both select the works and guide installation of the exhibition. In addition, he will attend the exhibition reception and present a lecture at the College of Design on August 24, 2009.

Selection/Notification
Thirty total works by 30 alumni (or teams of alumni) will be selected. Only the people/works selected for the Gallery 181 exhibition will be featured in the printed catalog. One submission from everyone who enters will be posted in an accompanying online show.

All entrants will be notified of selection results by mail the week of March 23, 2009. Selected works cannot be substituted and are committed for the duration of the exhibit.

Catalog/Internet Exhibition
The 30 works selected for the gallery exhibition will be included in a full-color catalog with an introduction by College of Design Dean Mark Engelbrecht and an essay by curator David McFadden.

Following notification, alumni whose work is selected for the exhibition will be required to submit high-resolution images, a brief bio, and updated artist/project statement (if appropriate) for inclusion in the catalog. Each selected alumnus/a will receive a complimentary catalog. Additional copies will be available for purchase.

One image from everyone who submits work will be posted in an online show accompanying the gallery exhibition.

Liability/Insurance
Submission of works and completed entry form indicates acceptance of all conditions described in this prospectus. The College of Design will insure selected works of art throughout the exhibition, from the time of their delivery to the time of their departure from our premises. The college is not responsible for the loss or damage of works while in transit. Alumni are encouraged to secure their own insurance to cover delivery/return of their work.

Entrants are responsible for clearing photographs for publication and reproduction by the College of Design. The College of Design will provide proper photography and other project credits when using photos and other images, but will not assume responsibility for any copyrights or photography fees. The College of Design retains the right to photograph or otherwise reproduce submitted works in printed and electronic form, regardless of copyright, for promotional and educational purposes.
